ABOUT

John Black (born 1971) in the Bogside area of Derry where he continues to live and work. A place described as a confident working class neighbourhood with a strong sense of history and community, of self-organisation and self-empowerment all of which has influenced him directly and the art he creates.

He is a visual artist working with photography, video and installation, his work explores the power dynamics within society in documenting class, community and labour. His work is often assisted by historical or anti authoritarian text which seeks to challenge forms of relationships based on domination and submission, power and control.

A graduate of University of Ulster's, Belfast School of Art, he has received a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art specialising in Sculpture and Lens, and an MFA in Photography. He is currently continuing his practice participating in several solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally.
